SCNS was first started by Ralph and Ellen Click in 1966.  At that time, Ralph Click was the minister of Church of the Brethren and the nursery school was associated with the church.  This affiliation lasted only one year.  In 1967, the school became independent from Church of the Brethren and the school site has remained at the church over the past 40 years.  SCNS is a non-profit parent participation cooperative, located within the facilities of the Community Church of the Brethren, 327 "A" Street, in Bakersfield.

One of the reasons SCNS is special, is because it offers a true "nursery school" environment where "learning through play" is emphasized. Another reason SCNS is special is parent participation.  Our governing board is composed of parents, and while we employ one director/teacher, parents also work at the school to implement the  program.  This creates a unique environment where parents and children can learn from one another.  This approach also helps to keep tuition low, enabling those from all backgrounds to attend.  SCNS does not receive any State or Federal funding, parent participation and fundraising are the backbone of the school.  SCNS is a wonderful experience for child and parent alike, and believes that love and learning go hand in hand!
